Scarifying uses specialist equipment to lift accumulated moss and thatch from around the grass plants. A lawn can look quite dramatic immediately afterwards, particularly where there has been a heavy build-up, but that is part of the process. Done at the right time and followed by appropriate care, scarifying gives the remaining grass better conditions to recover and grow more strongly.

Choosing the right moment to scarify
Scarifying is normally carried out while grass is actively growing and there is enough moisture for recovery, commonly in spring or early autumn. Drought, frost and badly stressed turf are poor conditions; good care sometimes means waiting for the lawn to be ready.
The process removes moss and thatch that can prevent water, air and nutrients reaching the root zone. It is suitable where that layer is holding the lawn back; it is not automatically necessary for every lawn.
Making room for stronger recovery
A lawn can look sparse or untidy immediately after mechanical scarification because loosened material has been lifted out. That appearance is expected. Recovery depends on growing conditions, watering, mowing and any agreed overseeding.
